01The Challenge
Low-code platforms are frequently adopted on the assumption that configuration alone will carry a complex operational process. In practice, the moment a requirement involves conditional approvals, external users with differentiated permissions, payment reconciliation, or audit obligations, the default patterns run out.
The difficulty is knowing where that boundary sits — extending too early produces an unmaintainable system, extending too late produces one that cannot meet the requirement at all.
02The Approach
Data architecture in Dataverse was settled before interface work, since portal behaviour, security roles, and reporting all inherit from it.
Standard platform capability carried the common path. Custom Liquid templates, FetchXML queries, and Power Automate flows were introduced where the requirement genuinely exceeded configuration.
Environment management, deployment, and documentation were handled through Azure DevOps and PAC CLI so that releases were repeatable rather than manual.
